On Wednesday afternoon it was announced that Derrick Rose has been traded to the New York Knicks. The 27 year old former MVP was traded for Jose Calderon, Jerian Grant, and Robin Lopez. The Bulls also threw in Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick. The Sports world is buzzing over what this could mean for the future of the Knicks, and if they are a step closer to being competitive. This trade however is not that big of a deal. Derrick Rose was great, he was one of the best players in the league, he was a game changer for any franchise. Unfortunately these are all things that Derrick Rose was. Since his catastrophic knee injury he hasn’t been close to being the same player he was. He’s been unable to stay healthy and when he’s on the court he’s usually an average to sometimes above average point guard. There will be flashes of brilliance for Derrick Rose in New York. There will be times when Knicks fans think he’s back, but ultimately this will be short lived. I still think this is a good trade though because Derrick Rose can still be an effective Point Guard in this league, but Knicks fans should not expect him to be the Superstar that he once was. He will be a role player and Melo and Porzingis should expect to carry the load. This is a trade with a big name, but the Knicks are still a long way away from being competitive.
Phil Jackson has said that he plans to target Kevin Durant in Free agency. This is the biggest no news story of the day. Of course he’s going to try to sign Durant, Durant is a superstar in the NBA. There isn’t a team in the NBA that doesn’t want Durant on their team. Phil Jackson’s hope is that by acquiring Derrick Rose it will entice Kevin Durant to come to New York and form a big 3 with Rose, Melo and Durant, and maybe a big 4 with Porzingis. I don’t think the acquisition of Rose makes New York anymore appealing for Durant. Durant wants to go somewhere where he knows he can win, not a place where he just hopes and prays that his point guard can make it through a season. I do not see Durant signing with the Knicks. I think his best option is to stay in OKC or go to GSW.
If the Knicks can not sign Durant this season will be continued frustration.
